Regional Internet Registry – There are five RIRs worldwide which are responsible for the allocation of Internet Number Resources (INRs) in their respective service region. These regions cover 248 countries in total, whereby the service region of RIPE NCC with 76 countries serves the most countries of all RIRs.

National Internet Registries – Some RIRs approved NIRs such as the JPNIC (Japan Network Information Center) or the CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Center) which are NIRs of APNIC.

Local Internet Registry – A member of a RIR is usually called LIR. This can be a legal entity such an organization with thousands of customers, but also natural persons may apply for such a membership.
